Wednesday, July 20th, 2016

For years, poker players have had the opportunity to compete in the World Series of Poker. Every summer, the WSOP heads to Las Vegas to hold a multitude of poker tournament events, including options to win a coveted gold bracelet. The best of the best take part in such events and names are made in the poker industry due to amazing wins.

Since the early 2000s, online poker sites have offered qualifiers for players to be able to win a seat to a WSOP event for a much lower price. Most buy-ins to the WSOP are a few hundred dollars and go as high as $10,000 for the Main Event. There are larger buy-ins but the majority have mostly affordable options or somewhat affordable for a once in a lifetime opportunity. Online poker sites such as 888poker make it easy for players to take part in such big events in the hopes that players will do well and the brand will be recognized.

This year, 888poker offered players the opportunity to qualify to compete in the WSOP Main Event. This $10,000 buy-in event is the most popular on the schedule, one that everyone wants to take part in. For the 2016 Main Event, two players were able to earn their seats to compete via 888poker and work their way into the November Nine.

Both Fernando Pons and Griffin Benger earned a seat into the Main Event via an online qualifier and now have the opportunity to win the tournament. When the final table is back in action this November, Pons will sit last in chips with 6.15 million while Benger will be not too far ahead in the 7th position with 26.175 million. It will be interesting to see if either of the competitors will be able to earn the big win thanks to qualifying for a much lower amount via 888poker.

Many players begin to enjoy the game as teens and college students, slowly working their way into online and live game play. Many young players end up with sponsorships from large online poker companies or winning live event after live event to build a solid career. Sam Holden is one such young man who has built a nice career in the poker industry, even making the November Nine. The pro has now announced he is going to take a semi-retirement to focus on his college career.

The pro has received a letter of acceptance for the University of Keno and would like to study for a philosophy degree. The pro will begin his studies in September so he will continue to work on his degree for the next three years.

The poker pro was first introduced into the poker industry after competing in the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event. The young player was able to outlast the majority of the 6,865 field to make the final table and finish in ninth place. Since that time, the young pro has earned over $1 million in live game play and just over $800,000 in online game play.

Holden stated in the blog post that he has spent four incredible years playing poker on a full time basis and never dreamed he would be able to do so. However, he does say that he has lost his drive, especially when it comes to live game play. He will now be taking a short break to focus on his education and where his life is headed in the future.
