WSOP Poker Dealer Fired

Thursday, June 20th, 2013

CardPlayer has reported a very interesting incident that took place at this year’s World Series of Poker last week. The news source spoke with Mike Sowers a poker pro who recently encountered a bazaar situation. The pro considers a hand from last week to be the craziest he has ever been involved in.

Sowers stated that he was competing in a WSOP event when a new dealer came to the table. Sowers was given pocket nines and raised with his pair and a player to his left raised to 525. Another player called and Sowers did as well. The flop showed 9-8-7 all hearts and Sowers was holding the best set, so he checked. The player to his left checked and the third player bet 800.

Sowers then check raised to 2,600 and one player folded. The remaining player placed Sowers all in which was around 5,500. Sowers called and showed his set and the remaining player held pocket Queens for a flush draw. Sowers then stated that the dealer looked at him and stated: “Sorry man, bad beat.”

Sowers looked at the dealer in doubt and told the dealer: ‘you know I have the best hand, right?’ The dealer just looked at the pro and stated: “Sorry man, bad beat.” The turn showed a 6 of hearts and a Queen on the river. Sowers just looked on in disbelief.

After he was knocked out, Sowers left the tournament area and then later on that day heard from a fellow player from the table that the dealer laughed after Sowers was busted and said he did not shuffle the deck. After he heard this, the pro went and complained to the staff at the Rio and spoke with Jack Effel, the tournament director.

Sowers does not know what happened in the case, but he does know that the dealer was let go. Sowers stated that Effel said they did not view the security cameras in the case but Sowers believes that this is not so.

Dan Kelly On a WSOP Cash-Out Roll

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

The 2013 World Series of Poker is in full swing and many pros and amateurs are doing quite well in the many different events. Players dream of earning a gold WSOP bracelet but most have to settle for cashing out, which is still great! One pro is doing quite well in this year’s WSOP and has managed to cash out a whooping six times during the series. The tournament series still has many events left and Kelly may soon be able to break the current record for the most cash outs earned in one year of WSOP game play.

The current record for most cash outs in a single WSOP is held by Konstantin Puchkov. The pro was able to earn eleven cash outs last year and Kelly would have to win 6 more events to beat the current record. Kelly is on a good pace and if he continues his momentum, he should be able to surpass Puchkov by a large number of cash outs.

Kelly is currently competing in Event #21 of the WSOP which is a shorthanded no-limit hold’em tournament with a buy-in of $3,000. As of today, Kelly is in the top 13 with game play to resume later today. He is already in the money so one more cashout can be added to his total. Kelly is earning a great amount of cash in this year’s WSOP as he is already up over $400,000.

It will be interesting to see if Kelly will be able to maintain his momentum in the WSOP and continue to earn cash outs in the events he competes in. we may see a brand new record created soon and one that could pay off handsomely for the poker pro! We will continue to cover Kelly’s game play and report as he continues his plight.

Poker Progress Could Lead To Increase in Poker Television

Friday, June 7th, 2013

Years ago, it was not uncommon to see a variety of poker programs on television. From NBC’s Heads Up Poker to Poker After Dark and of course the WSOP footage, poker footage was not lacking. However, after online poker dissolved in the US, poker shows quickly went off the air. However, with the progress of online poker in the US, many believe that poker shows will now be back in action.

According to a recent article by Reuters, the recent legalizing of online poker should see poker shows back on the television. Jamie Horowitz of Walt Disney’s ESPN stated that online poker should introduce many new people to the game and this should bring a new audience for online poker. It is the ESPN network that offers the World Series of Poker footage and they are currently filming events at the 2013 WSOP.

Because of the upswing of online poker, those in the television industry have begun to discuss new ideas for poker programming. Reality shows that cover female players as well as new online gaming selections are all under consideration. However, some are wary of creating new poker television shows because the option is only available in a few states.

It was back in the early 2000s that poker programming really took off and saw great numbers in ratings and viewings. However when Black Friday hit, in mid April 2011, poker shows pulled off the air as networks did not want to be involved with the charges of money laundering, fraud and more.

However, times seem to be changing for the good in the area of online poker in the US and hopefully fans and players will soon be able to frequently see the games on television and enjoy watching as much as they love playing the game.

WSOP Sets High Buy-in of Males in Female Event

Thursday, May 30th, 2013

The World Series of Poker is the most anticipated tournament series on the planet and pros and amateurs from around the globe converge in Las Vegas during the summer to compete in various WSOP events. The events range in buy-in and format but one thing is for certain, the winner will earn the coveted WSOP gold bracelet. One event available for players to enjoy is the Ladies option. Unfortunately very few women compete in the predominantly male field of poker so the Ladies event is an option for women to enjoy. However, men still manage to compete in this event as well.

Despite the fact that the event is catered to women only, the WSOP cannot discriminate and ban men from competing in this event. Most men are courteous and do not register to compete in the event but there are a few who just don’t care and compete anyway. Seth Palansky a spokesperson for the WSOP commented on these types of men stating: “Usually they are obnoxious and disrespectful. It’s usually a man who probably doesn’t have a mother…some men are disgusting, unfortunately.”

So to try and discourage men from competing in the ladies only event, the WSOP has set a very high buy-in for men: $10,000. Women who want to compete will be able to take advantage of a very high discount of $9,000 and pay only $1,000 to compete. The increase buy-in for men is considered legal per a new law from 2011 in the state which says the women are able to enjoy reduced prices on certain items including drinks, food, entertainment, nightclubs and casinos.

Hopefully the higher buy-in will discourage any men from registering to compete in the women’s only event. However, if not, the women can just take out the men and make them look like the fools they are!
