Manny Pacquiao Dropping Poker Hands instead of Punches

Monday, May 11th, 2015

It is no surprise to hear the name Manny Pacquiao associated with the boxing world but many do not know the boxer is also a poker player. Pacquiao frequently enjoys poker gaming and has been known to hit the high stakes tables a time or two. In a recent Sports Illustrated issue, the magazine delves deep into the boxer’s love of poker, even reporting that he spent $100,000 in many a poker game.

Pacquiao is no stranger to gaming and has been known to drop hundreds of thousands on cock fighting as well as poker game play. It was reported in the article that the boxer will frequently spend $100,000 at the poker tables, a seemingly large amount for one that does not play the game on a career level.

While $100,000 is a huge sum for most, the boxer has a high pay grade so can easily afford the loss. It seems as though the player regularly hits the tables, especially when you take in to account the regular sightings posted at popular poker forums. The boxer would frequently hit the tables after a fight in Las Vegas or even after simply promoting a fight. Anytime he could play, it seemed Pacquiao would be at the gaming tables.

It is not uncommon to find sports stars or even celebrities at the casino gaming tables. Poker is a common past time that many enjoy and even some sports stars earning sponsorships from major poker brands such as PokerStars. The boxer has now earned a pretty penny in his recent match against Floyd Mayweather and certainly has the cash to compete. After earning $100 million just for showing up at the fight, we may soon see Pacquiao once again at the poker tables throwing down $100,000 games or possibly even more!

Rick Salomon Reportedly Wins $40 Million

Wednesday, March 18th, 2015

file4741238088930According to various reports, poker player Rick Salomon earned a nice payday when competing against fellow poker player Andy Beal. Salomon is currently going through a divorce with Pamela Anderson and according to court documents, Salomon was able to earn a $40 million by playing against fellow poker pros. The bulk of this cash seems to come from Andy Beal.

Anderson is trying to see some of the cash come her way, claiming half of the money won from the previous year. Based on information provided by Anderson, Beal and Salomon met one weekend in Las Vegas at the Bellagio. They competed at the poker tables and Beal was up $13 million at one point but then ended up being down $16 million against Salomon.

This would not be the first time Beal has been in the news for losing a large amount of cash. It was reported not long ago that the pro lost $5 million when competing against Todd Brunson. After finishing fourth in the World Series of Poker $1 million buy-in event, Salomon learned that Anderson was divorcing him. Anderson filed for divorce which is nothing new to the couple.

This is the second time the couple has separated since being together. Back in 2007, the April had been together for just two months before calling it quits. The reason the two are together is because of the game of poker. Anderson was said to have lost $250,000 while competing against Salomon and the two could not get enough of each other.

It will be interesting to see what a judge decides in the divorce proceedings, since there is a great deal of money on the line. Will Anderson get her cut or will Salomon be able to keep his earnings after what seems to have been a very profitable 2014?

Atlantic City Down to 8 Casinos

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014

file4741238088930The land based gaming environment in Atlantic City, New Jersey seems to be dwindling. The city now has only 8 casinos for land based casino game play after the Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino closed just yesterday morning. The casino’s closure is the fourth of the year and is not the best outcome for the gambling city.

The casino, which is located along the boardwalk, was opened back in 1984 and had been in operation for decades. The casino had been on a slow downward spiral, which was really sad for many to watch. The casino which had once reveled with hundreds of players only had a handful on the premises when the doors would close.

The Trump Plaza was able to earn just over $36 million this year which is over 30% less than the same time frame last year. As a comparison, the casino earned in one year the same as some Atlantic City casinos earn in a two week time frame. With the closure of this casino and possibly the Taj Mahjal in coming weeks, the city would be down over 10,000 jobs and more, which is a big hit to the city.

The poker community was not necessarily affected by the closure of the Trump Plaza as they did not have a poker room, but the Taj Mahal does. The casino has 48 gaming tables which means it is the second largest in the city. If the casino closes in November, which it may very well do, then poker players in Atlantic City would only have five poker rooms to enjoy.

The state now offers online gaming to try and pick up the slack where land based options left off but operators must be connected to a physical casino in the state to be able to offer online gaming. With the losses, operators have even less partners than before to get in on the online poker action.

Popular Poker Pro Looking for Investor

Thursday, January 16th, 2014

file4741238088930Many times, poker pros will offer an opportunity for investors to stake them during game play. This is a common occurrence, especially during popular tournament series such as the World Series of Poker. Greg Raymer is a poker pro who rose to fame back in 2004 when he won the WSOP Main Event. The pro found great success but now is asking for investors to help with the 2014 season.

According to a post at TwoPlusTwo, Raymer is accepting investments for his tournament game play. It is usually common for players to offer shares for one tournament or a schedule of tournaments but Raymer is looking for something a bit different. The poker pro wants to gain investors who will basically fund his bankroll. Investors will be providing cash for both cash games and tournaments during 2014.

Raymer has proposed a deal which would see investors purchasing a bankroll percentage. Shares are currently begin sold by Raymer at $1,000 and would like to raise $100,000. Raymer has listed a system that would give the pro 40% of the total profit above the $100,000 by the end of the year. Investors would then split the remaining 60% based on the number of shares purchased. Investors would also lose equally based on this number if Raymer has an unsuccessful season.

The pro is claiming that he has a winning track record for the past twenty one years in cash game and tournament play. However, he has not been sponsored by a poker site since 2011. The pro is hoping to make the investment deal work so he can get back in the game. He is also apparently being pressured by his wife, who is nervous about his continuing his poker career. It will be interesting to see how many investors Raymer is able to earn as well as if he has a successful season.

Poker Game Leads to Unexpected Stabbing

Thursday, November 7th, 2013

Poker players are usually serious about the game. When one sits down at the felt, it’s game on. Players focus and try to read their competitors to be able to get a feel as to how they should progress in game play. Poker is a fun game but one that players do take very seriously. Some may take the game a little too seriously and when this happens, it is never good. A recent story out of India proves just how crazy it can get when you take the game a little too seriously.

Two men were partaking in a home poker game in North Delhi, India just a few days ago when things really got out of hand. One man was stabbed to death after he got into a fight with a friend over the amount of cash in the poker pot. There were $2.90 in the pot and the players got into a heated argument, so much so that one player was stabbed and died.

According to a police officer on the scene, the victim was drinking and playing cards with friends. An argument broke out over who the cash and the attacker when to the kitchen and got a knife and then repeatedly stabbed the victim. The victim was stabbed several times in the abdomen and chest area before he was taken to the hospital.

Sadly the victim was pronounced dead from the wounds inflicted. This is just one crazy story as to how poker can be taken too seriously, especially when money is involved. Add drinking into the mix and you get a stabbing with one person dead and another facing serious penalty for his actions.  The group has now lost two friends over a measly $2.90 after a round of drinking.

Poker Progress Could Lead To Increase in Poker Television

Friday, June 7th, 2013

Years ago, it was not uncommon to see a variety of poker programs on television. From NBC’s Heads Up Poker to Poker After Dark and of course the WSOP footage, poker footage was not lacking. However, after online poker dissolved in the US, poker shows quickly went off the air. However, with the progress of online poker in the US, many believe that poker shows will now be back in action.

According to a recent article by Reuters, the recent legalizing of online poker should see poker shows back on the television. Jamie Horowitz of Walt Disney’s ESPN stated that online poker should introduce many new people to the game and this should bring a new audience for online poker. It is the ESPN network that offers the World Series of Poker footage and they are currently filming events at the 2013 WSOP.

Because of the upswing of online poker, those in the television industry have begun to discuss new ideas for poker programming. Reality shows that cover female players as well as new online gaming selections are all under consideration. However, some are wary of creating new poker television shows because the option is only available in a few states.

It was back in the early 2000s that poker programming really took off and saw great numbers in ratings and viewings. However when Black Friday hit, in mid April 2011, poker shows pulled off the air as networks did not want to be involved with the charges of money laundering, fraud and more.

However, times seem to be changing for the good in the area of online poker in the US and hopefully fans and players will soon be able to frequently see the games on television and enjoy watching as much as they love playing the game.

Poker Players Find Love with New Dating Site

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

Are lonely at the poker table? Need a significant other to play Heads up with? A new dating website might be just what you need. It is hard enough to find someone special and poker players are no different. Millions of people use dating sites such as eHarmony but now poker players have a new site specifically for their main interest: Poker. PokerRomance.com is a new dating site that is supposed to connect poker players with new people so a connection can possibly be made.

The poker dating site is dedicated to helping fans of the game find potential partners or at least a date or two. The site offers a search tool so players can enter in traits they are looking for to find the perfect person. The site helps everyone find someone in their area so it is easier than ever to find someone to spend time with.

Players would need to create a dating profile and then list things about themselves to be able to find other people who are single and looking for someone like you! Matches will then be able to contact each other to meet up.

After making a profile, you can look through other profiles to try and find someone to meet and possibly set up a date. This new option is perfect for those who have tried dating sites before but want someone with more similar interests or at least someone who enjoys the game of poker.

The new site was covered by Card Player and seems to be run by the same company. It will be interesting to see if players begin to find love at the site and if any top pros get in on the dating action! Who knows, we may see new couples emerge during the WSOP if pros begin to use the site for love
