Daniel Weinman Earns WPT Tournament of Champions Win

Tuesday, April 11th, 2017

The second annual World Poker Tour Tournament of Champions has finished up and it was poker pro Daniel Weinman who earned the first place win. Weinman had to face Michael Mizrachi in heads-up play to earn the title win and not only did he earn a huge prize but he also took home a 2018 Audi S5 coupe, custom poker table and a ton more prizes! The added value of the additional prizes certainly made the big win even sweeter!

66 players made up the field of competitors as the World Poker Tour event is played by WPT champions. Players either win a seat for free or they are a champion from a previous season and they buy-in for $15,000. The tournament was sponsored by Monster and saw an additional $100,000 added to the pot via the tournament sponsor.

When the final day of game play began, Weinman was the chip leader but had to fight to stay in the competition. Other top players at the table included Erik Seidel and of course Mizrachi. When heads up play began, Weinman would have about a 5 to 1 chip lead over Mizrachi. However, the lead by Weinman would dwindle as Mizrachi doubled up a few times. However, Weinman would maintain the lead and ended up earning the win with A-8 off suit.

The final hand would show a W-J-3-8-7 on the board with Weinman holding an A-8 and Mizrachi holding pocket fives. The 8s were better and Weinman would claim the title win, prize money and around $150,000 in additional prizes including the brand new Audi.

Final Results of the World Poker Tour Tournament of Champions

First Place Daniel Weinman $381,500
Second Place Michael Mizrachi $218,000
Third Place Daniel Santoro $133,525
Fourth Place David Ormsby $95,375
Fifth Place Erik Seidel $73,575

Small Poker Legislation Win for Virginia

Wednesday, January 25th, 2017

Louise Lucas is a senator in the state of Virginia who has worked for many years to see casino gaming come to the state. Time after time, Lucas’ efforts have failed. However, this past Monday saw a measure introduced by Lucas move forward. The Senate General Laws Committee held a hearing on Monday in which the Senate Bill 1400 was approved. This bill will allow organizations that currently provide bingo games to also offer poker gaming.

The bill was moved through the committee with a close vote of 8-7. The poker bill was approved thanks to Senator William R. DeSteph Jr. joining her side in the matter. Additional Senators approved the bill including George Barker, Marnie Locke, Jennifer Wexton, Adam Ebbin, Monty Mason and Jeremy McPike.

There is still a long way to go for the SB 1400 to move forward. Even if the full Senate moves the measure through the bill will still have to be approved by the House of Delegates, a group that tends to not be in favor of gambling.

On the negative side, Lucas also saw bills lose out on passage. She tried to see a casino gambling bill passed in the committee but lost 7-8, the opposite vote of SB 1400. The bill that failed would have seen Virginia open a casino for the very first time.

Lucas tried her best to gain approval for the bill talking with Senate members about how $10 million in revenues could be earned if a gaming venue was placed in her home city of Portsmouth. The state is reportedly losing out on revenues that are going to Maryland, especially after MGM National Harbor opened last December. Gamblers are leaving by the busload to enjoy the casino gaming options that are provided in the neighboring state.

The victory by Lucas may be small but it should help the state to hopefully move forward in regards to casino gaming.

Poker Hall of Fame Inducts Carlos Mortensen and Todd Brunson

Monday, October 31st, 2016

Every year, around the final table of the World Series of Poker Main Event, the Poker Hall of Fame inducts new members. A lavish ceremony takes place honoring the individuals who are chosen as the best of the best in the poker world. For 2016, it was Carlos Mortensen and Todd Brunson who earned such honors. The ceremony took place last week and saw many of the living members of the Hall of Fame coming out to show support and enjoy the evening.

During his acceptance speech, Brunson stated that he would like to thank his mother, that she played a big role in his persona as well as in being a poker player. He learned valuable lessons from her in regards to the game, despite the fact that she has never played a hand. Brunson was comedic in his speech and discussed many stories he had about the poker world as he accepted his new spot.

Mortenson became the first European player to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame and earned the title by having proved he has what it takes on the poker felt during events around the world. The poker pro has quite the career, having earned the top spot as the all-time money winner for the World Poker Tour as well as earning the most WPT titles in the history of the World Poker Tour, tied with Gus Hansen and Anthony Zinno for this honor at three titles a piece.

As far as Brunson’s career is concerned, he has seen a successful career on the tournament circuit having won a WSOP bracelet and finished well in many WSOP events. Brunson has cashed out in WPT events as well as earned $4.3 million overall during his career.

Both men are well-deserved of the honor and join the members of the Poker Hall of Fame, ready to vote next year when the process begins anew.

Revel Casino to be rebranded; Set for 2017 Opening

Wednesday, September 21st, 2016

The Revel Casino of Atlantic City closed back in 2014 after being in business for only two years. The property was never able to turn a profit even though it was the most expensive casino to be created in the history of Atlantic City. The venue was taken over by Glenn Straub, a developer of real estate based in Florida, who has finally decided to reopen the venue, with an opening date sometime next year.

The venue will now be known as TEN and will be unveiled sometime in early 2017. According to the Press of Atlantic City, Straub made the announcement of the changes and opening date range via his Polo Country Club North company before a hearing was set to take place on proposed changes to the facility.

CEO of TEN, Robert Landino, stated that the venue is what is next for Atlantic City. TEN is thrilled to share their brand with the public and to be able to introduce a new era of resort and entertainment to the region. The TEN brand combined with the infinity logo is representative of the mission of the company to provide the highest-rated amenities as well as a daily endeavor to provide an infinitely perfect escape for guests.

Straub purchased the casino last year in April for around $82 million. The venue cost $2.4 billion to create. Several times Straub has said he was going to walk away from the project, having come up with many ideas on what the building should be. Such ideas included a home for refugees as well as a university.

For now, it seems the venue will be a place for entertainment but will not include gaming such as slot machines or table games. The property was set to open this past June but those plans did not come to fruition.

Global Poker League Heads to Vegas for Playoffs and Final

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2016

The Global Poker League is in their inaugural season and with the playoffs and final coming up, the GPL has now decided to move to Las Vegas. The GPL Playoffs and Final will all take place in Las Vegas instead of in San Diego and London.

The Global Poker League was planning on hosting the playoffs in San Diego in alignment with TwitchCon with the finals to take place at Wembley Stadium in London. However, GPL has confirmed to PokerNews that both events will be taking place in Las Vegas. Additional changes include the regular season second half moving back a few weeks. The new date for starting will be the 20th of September.

Alex Dreyfus, the CEO of the Global Poker League, reported the news of the changes with the schedule being changed due to looking back on how the league has fared thus far.  While looking back on previous events, the GPL came to the decision that it does not make sense to run the events against popular poker tournament series that are running at the same time.

The return of the GPL schedule would have coincided with the EPT Barcelona as well as the WCOOP and the Burning Man. The GPL was up against the SCOOP back in the spring and were smashed because of it. The GPL wants to plan accordingly to ensure that no other events are taking place during the same time frame.

The move of the GPL to Las Vegas for the playoffs and finals was done in order for the league to be successful, according to Dreyfus. The goal of the GPL is to be around for a very long time. The GPL needs to be around for three to five years to solidify their position. Dreyfus stated it is not about spending money but making the right decisions to allow the league to grow organically.
